Luke 7:36-50 or Matthew 26:6-13
In this passage, Mary, who was considered a well-known prostitute, came to the Lord Jesus’ feet. She used her tears and hair to wash and dry the feet of the Lord. After, she opened an alabaster box with an expensive fragrance and poured it on Jesus’ feet. When others saw this, they were shocked and wondered why the lady would pour such expensive perfume on Christ’s feet.
To be honest, if I saw Mary doing this, I would be a bit confused, like , my dear, why are you on the floor wailing, like its never that deep.
But it’s actually that deep, it’s even deeper than I think.
Mary was so vulnerable and shameless before the Lord because she understood her sinful nature and that the person she stood before was about to save her. She understood that she had fallen short and needed redemption and Jesus was her redeemer.
Sometimes, we forget what Jesus has actually done for us, in terms of redemption.
Here’s a quick recap.
Man fell into sin so we were destined for the wrath of God. God did not want this for us so He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to come down to earth and die a brutal death so that you and I shall be saved from the destined wrath of God and ultimate separation from our maker. Jesus did this for you! I hope you’re understanding how big this is! Because of the death of Jesus Christ, once we accept Him as our Lord and personal saviour and live for His glory and pursue righteousness everyday, we will not suffer for eternity.
For Mary, she might have seen herself as a very sinful person but the fact that Jesus still did all that for her left her in awe and that should be our response too. We are all sinners to a high degree. We have all been very naughty and definitely far from holy and righteous but Jesus has died and resurrected for our sake.
I need you to understand how serious your sin is and with that you’ll be able to appreciate the Lord’s sacrifice a bit more. We all owed a serious debt but Jesus paid it all. Hallelujah!
“Open our eyes, oh Lord, to see our filth so that we may see how holy you are.”
Let me leave you with this scenario: You are a wearing a white shirt that is heavily stained. You’re in a long corridor with a lamp at the far end. Right now, you’re about 15m away from the lamp so you can barely see any stains and you think you’re fine, you don’t need new clothes. You take some steps and now you’re 10m away from the lamp. You see a few spots but it doesn’t push you to change your outfit. A few steps after, you’re about 5m away and now you can see how dirty your shirt is but you still think no one will notice your dirt. You take some steps closer to the lamp and you’re practically in front of it. Now, you see how dirty your shirt is and you rush out to get a clean one.
Jesus is the lamp and the dirt is our sinful nature. The closer we get to Him, the more we realise how dirty we are and how bad we need Him!
Today, I pray that the Lord will remind us of His redemption and through this lead us into deeper realms of intimacy with Him🤍.
